How to Install and Update a Joomla Extension
Use Joomla native installation and update tools, keep the package intact and verify the component, module or plugin after an upgrade.
Install the complete package ZIP
A Joomla package can contain a component plus required plugins or modules. Upload the complete package through System > Install > Extensions unless the product documentation explicitly identifies a constituent ZIP that should be installed separately.
Use upgrade installation instead of manual file replacement
A package manifest with method=upgrade lets Joomla replace the extension files while preserving the data that belongs to the installed extension. This is safer than copying files by FTP because Joomla can also process package relationships, manifests and database updates.
- Back up the site before updating a production extension.
- Check the extension version after installation.
- Confirm that required plugins are enabled after a package update.
Keep Joomla Update Sites enabled
Joomla extensions that provide an update server register it in the native Update Sites area. This lets Joomla check version availability from the administrator dashboard. Commercial packages may still require an active update entitlement before the update ZIP can be downloaded.
Verify the site after an update
Clear relevant Joomla caches, open the extension administrator view and test the frontend behavior it controls. For SEO and redirect extensions, test with temporary rules first and confirm the final URL before switching a redirect to permanent 301.
