Joomla Image Optimizer Extension

Overview

TTB Image Optimizer reduces unnecessary image weight directly on the Joomla server. It combines a native Media Manager upload hook with a controlled bulk workflow for existing files.

What it does

• Optimizes supported new images uploaded through Joomla Media Manager before Joomla writes them to disk.
• Scans existing files under the Joomla /images directory and processes them in controlled batches.
• Resizes oversized images to configurable maximum dimensions.
• Re-encodes JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF in their original source format when Imagick or GD supports the format.
• Provides server capability checks, quality controls, minimum-size and minimum-savings rules.
• Supports excluded folders and optional original backups for bulk runs.
• Tracks processed image hashes together with the active optimizer profile to avoid unnecessary repeat compression.
• Shows the last automatic Media Manager optimization with before/after/saved statistics.
• Creates no custom database tables and sends no images to a remote processing service.

Installation

1. Upload the ZIP in Joomla Administrator > System > Install > Extensions.
2. Open Components > TTB Image Optimizer and review Options.
3. Enable Media Action - TTB Image Optimizer when you are ready to optimize new Media Manager uploads.
4. Test a normal Media Manager image upload before starting a bulk run.
5. Use controlled batches for existing /images files and keep normal site backups.

Requirements

• Live tested on Joomla 5.4.7 with GD.
• Joomla 6.x is an intended compatibility target; live runtime validation is still pending.
• PHP 8.1 or newer is recommended.
• Imagick or GD with support for each image format you want to process.

Important

Version 1.0.2 preserves the source file extension. It does not convert JPG/PNG URLs to WebP/AVIF and does not rewrite article or module content. Third-party uploaders that bypass Joomla Media Manager are not claimed as automatic integrations; eligible files stored under /images can still be handled by the bulk optimizer.
