Joomla Extension Compatibility Checker

Overview

TTB Extension Inspector runs a static preflight on Joomla extension ZIPs before installation, release or Joomla 6 migration. It inspects package structure and source signals without installing or executing the uploaded extension code.

What it does

• Inspects Joomla component, plugin, module and package ZIPs.
• Reads declared child ZIPs inside Joomla packages one level deep.
• Validates manifest XML metadata and referenced files/folders.
• Reports namespace and selected Joomla 5/6 migration signals.
• Detects selected legacy APIs such as JFactory, legacy MVC aliases and deprecated mail/database access patterns.
• Flags risky patterns including eval, process execution, unserialize, disabled TLS verification and debug output.
• Checks unsafe archive paths, suspicious expansion ratios and common release-hygiene files.
• Shows stable rule IDs plus file and line locations where available.
• Exports reports as JSON or standalone HTML.
• Never executes PHP code from the extension being inspected.

Installation

1. Upload the ZIP in Joomla Administrator > System > Install > Extensions.
2. Open Components > TTB Extension Inspector.
3. Review Options for ZIP size, entry-count and PHP text-scan limits.
4. Upload a Joomla extension ZIP and run the static inspection.
5. Review errors, warnings and notes before installation or release.

Requirements

• Live tested on Joomla 5.4.7.
• Joomla 6.x is an intended compatibility target; live runtime validation is still pending.
• PHP 8.1 or newer is recommended.
• PHP ZipArchive support is required for ZIP inspection.

Important

Static heuristic inspection cannot prove runtime compatibility, security or Joomla Extension Directory acceptance. A clean report does not replace installation/runtime testing. The uploaded extension code is read as data and is not executed by TTB Extension Inspector.
