How to Check Joomla Extension Compatibility Before an Upgrade
Compatibility checks are most useful as a preflight: inspect extension packages first, then confirm behavior on a staging Joomla upgrade.
Inventory third-party extensions before a major upgrade
A Joomla upgrade can be blocked by one outdated plugin, module or component even when the core update itself is supported. Create an inventory of non-core extensions and identify which packages need review before changing the production site.
Use static inspection to find obvious risks early
A preflight can inspect the extension manifest and package structure for compatibility signals before installation. It cannot prove that every runtime path works, but it can identify packages that deserve attention before a migration window begins.
- Check declared Joomla and PHP requirements.
- Review manifest structure and extension type.
- Look for compatibility assumptions that may have changed between Joomla generations.
Confirm on a staging copy
Joomla's own migration guidance recommends backup and compatibility assessment. After static review, restore or clone the site to a staging environment and run the intended upgrade there. That is where integration issues between otherwise-valid extensions become visible.
TTB Extension Inspector
TTB Extension Inspector provides the static ZIP preflight. TTB Joomla Migrator adds a staged migration workflow around extension scans, backup gates and the official Joomla update process.
